Wordpress 2.3.3 upgrade Hooray

Date February 9, 2008

Last night, I upgraded the version of Wordpress that was running this site to the latest version. I was scared for a moment, but I stopped that and was awesome instead. True Story…anyways, I really had been putting it off for a while, but it was time. I had been having issues working with my .htaccess file and the Populatiry Contest plug-in I was using kept throwing some random code errors after I would publish a post. For one thing, I was trying to do a .htaccess Mod-Rewrite for WWW my Domain Name Prefix. In other words, I was needing a 301 redirect or to forward all non www requests (like if you typed in beinwsomeinstead.com instead of www.beawesomeinstead.com) to the www counterpart so that way Google (and other search engines) would only index a page once and not think it is duplicate content.

Wordpress 2.3 fixes the 301 redirect issue for me so I didn’t have to worry with it anymore, even though I actually figured out my issue with the .htaccess file. Another great feature of Wordpress 2.3 that I found is that it notifies you when there is a newer version of a plug-in available.

All total I spent about 2 hours on the upgrade. Backing up my post information and database came first, then putting the site in maintenance mode using a great plug-in by Michael Woehrer.  After that I had to deactivate all my plug-ins and update the files. Once taht was done the bulk of my time was spent upgrading plug-in versions and redoing some customizations. Either wya…it was tons simplier than I had made it out to be in my mind…and I know people probably don’t care….In fact I’m probably talking to myself here but ..eehh…

Enjoy, don’t fear the upgrade and if you have questions, ask and I’ll direct you to someone else…maybe not, I’ll help..but it was humorous for the moment.
