Newsflash - Not Everyone in the World is Worthless

Date March 29, 2008

Every once in a while you come across a story that give you a small bit of hope and lets you know that not every person in this world is a miserable piece of trash (my apologies to many of my co-workers <grin>). I feel this may come as a surprise to most people.

I found this story via NPR about a mugging victim that took a not so common approach to his mugger. This is actually a very cool story. To sum it up for you… Julio Diaz was on his way home from work. He always gets off the subway 1 stop early to eat at his favorite restaurant for diner. A teenager pulls a knife on him and demands his wallet, after Julio give his wallet he offers his coat too… I don’t want to rehash the whole story but Julio then tells the teen:

“If you’re willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me … hey, you’re more than welcome.”

Julio Diaz,
speaking with the teenager who robbed him

No tricks, no police…he just saw an opportunity to help someone in need (even though the kid just robbed him). Julio Diaz, are are truly awesome. Do read the whole story…but let me end with another quote from Julio:

“I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It’s as simple as it gets in this complicated world.”

Julio Diaz

I heard that story when they played it on NPR! Loved it! I wish I was more like Julio…

That is awesome! There are some stories that just seem to take away all of the bad things you hear about everyday, like when a Starbuck’s barista donates a kidney to a customer.
